Beginner Tips For Meditation

Meditate, it seems like a day can’t go by without hearing about meditation and why we all should be doing it? Is it new? Why is it so popular at the moment? Has it always been popular, but just talked about more now? Everyone is talking about meditation from Lauryn at The Skinny Confidential, Oprah, Lady Gaga to Joe Rogan.

So what is meditation and why do we (really) need it?

In simple terms, Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress (mayo clinic).

Here are 5 easy tips I do, to help me meditate.

1. Start small, no like really small 2 - 5 minutes at first, working your way up to 10 minutes and beyond. Set an alarm.

2. Have a special meditation spot. Now this doesn’t have to be elaborate, but when I wake up, I sit up straight in my bed and hit my meditation app and do it for 5 minutes before anyone else is awake. Eventually, I will have a more dedicated space, but right now this gets it done before there are any other reasons that get in the way.

3. Use an app to guide you. There are SO many good (and free) options!

4. A tip that I love from Lauryn at The Skinny Confidential is to wear noise canceling headphones. They will also help to balance out the radio waves evenly between your ears which can help in making you relax to your fullest. Pair your noise canceling headphone with a sleep mask (this is the exact one I have been using) and lavender essential oils and you have the golden trifecta!

5. Don’t worry about doing it wrong. Your mind will likely wander and that’s ok. Continue to listen to a guided app and each day it will get a little easier!
