SEO Tips For Beginners

In this post, I want to go over some of the best Shopify SEO tips for beginner e-commerce stores. I know from personal experience SEO can be scary and stressful. However, follow these tips when starting out and take it one day at a time!

So, why do we care about SEO?

It has been said that Shopify SEO has the highest ROI of any other marketing strategies. So, most importantly what the heck is SEO anyways.

What is Search Engine Optimization or SEO?

To put it simply - SEO is how you optimize your website so you rank higher in a Google Search. Google is still the most popular Search Engine out there! So when a person Google’s your product or something similar to what you are selling, you want to come up.

Ranking higher (or coming up on the first page of Google) means more traffic to your website which means, more opportunity or likelihood to make a sale. That’s what we like to hear!

Step 1: Sign up for Google Search Console here.

An explanation about Google Console straight from Google:

“Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google that will help you monitor your website traffic, optimize your ranking, and make informed decisions about the appearance of your site's search results. You can use the information in Search Console to influence technical decisions for the website and do sophisticated marketing analysis in conjunction with other Google tools like Analytics, Google Trends, and Google Ads”.

Google Search Console offers tools and reports for the following actions:

  • Confirm that Google can find and crawl your site.

  • Fix indexing problems and request re-indexing of new or updated content.

  • View Google Search traffic data for your site: how often your site appears in Google Search, which search queries show your site, how often searchers click through for those queries, and more.

  • Receive alerts when Google encounters indexing, spam, or other issues on your site.

  • Show you which sites link to your website.

  • Troubleshoot issues for AMP, mobile usability, and other Search features.

2) Make sure to include a FAQ page in your Shopify store with the most common questions and answers.

A recent survey showed that Google’s “People also ask” feature now shows up for about 48.6% of searches.

With its prominent placement at the top of the SERP or Search Engine Results Page, everyone is going to want to get their content ranking in this SERP feature.

Example of the People also ask SERP feature

To get ranking, you need to provide answers to common questions in your content. Look to the SERPs or use a keyword research tool to identify long-tail question keywords among your audience

Then, provide comprehensive answers, including the questions in your H2s, H3s, and H4s, or adding a FAQ section.

This strategy will be a great way to gain more visibility at the top of SERPs in 2022, even if the web page where you provided the answer ranks lower on page one (or even on page two!).

Keywords remain the key to SEO! You can use Google’s Keyword Planner, to discover your sites top keywords.

Keyword research is essential for improving your on-page SEO.

There are four main places that you can add your keywords to improve the search engine optimization (SEO) for your online store:

  • page titles

  • meta descriptions

  • ALT tags

  • a page’s body content

Start here- go to your Online Store, Select Preferences:

Add in a Homepage title: using keywords that relate to your business. Please note: this title will show a clickable link in the Search Engine Results to your site!

Next fill in the “Homepage Meta Description” . This section shows after your title in the search engine page.

Again, use keywords descriptions while also highlighting what a customer can expect when visiting your store.

You can do this for EVERY page on your website, including every product listing pages. Go to your product listing page (where you edit the product). Scroll to the bottom of the product page and select “edit”. See below. Complete steps just like you did above, update the Page Title and Meta Description.
